George Benson
White Rabbit
Columbia | 1971

Who can ever forget 'Give Me The Night'? An enormous hit in the seventies and with a legendary video clip to it. George Benson’s number one single attacked the air waves and filled dance floors across the world. Benson has never been afraid of making commercial music alongside the Latin-inspired jazz he’s known for in the wee days of his career.

'White Rabbit' is something in between; funky jazz (Herbie Hancock on piano and Billy Cobbham on drums) with lots of Latin vibes and lots of smooth arrangements that could be appreciated by every music addict. This album stayed undug in my crates for a long time, until I heard Akrobatik’s 'Remind My Soul' (from his 'Balance' album), where Fakts One pitched up the opening guitar loop of the magnificent 'El Mar'. A top-notch song (with additional guitar playing by Bob James’ friend Earl Klugh) that can be heard in the background of several TV-documentaries and especially holiday infomercials from time to time. Another memorable song is the opening self-titled theme song which revives warm Spanish nights like Miles Davis’ album 'Sketches Of Spain' does. The opening arrangement was used on Nice & Smooth’s party track 'Do Whatcha Gotta Do'… Do Whatcha Gotta! International, do the Lambada! ('Jewel Of The Nile' album). The remake of 'California Dreamin' is kinda surprising but I always liked this instrumental jazzy version over the original 'hip-rock' version.

Besides Pat Metheny and Grant Green, George Benson is probably the greatest guitar player in the field of jazz music, bringing back Southern elements in his music (just like Grant Green actually) and trying to make jazz music more opener and more publicly.
