The Mary Jane Girls
The Mary Jane Girls
Motown | 1983
How much more eighties can you go than with the Mary Jane Girls? One of my most favourite girl bands of all time! Sot off Bananarama, this is Joanne 'Jojo' McDuffie, Yvette Marine, Candice Ghant, Kim Wuletich and Ann Bailey.
'All Night Long' is thé hit single of the record and has gained a reputation amongst diggers ever since hip-hop took and sampled it, especially the very infectious bass line. The most famous example is Redman’s 'Tonight’s da Night'. Big brain behind the group was Rick James, who wrote and produced almost everything on this album. Besides 'All Night Long' you might see us go crazy on the very danceable 'Candy Man', 'Boys' and 'Prove It', who all breathe that special synth sound that made 80's music so roaring and famous. 'Jealousy' is a more of an unnecessary rock track and some of the ballads ('On The Inside') are kinda disappointing if you consider the sexiness of both their lyrics and appearance, nevertheless the Mary Jane Girls remain a memorable act in eighties history.
The Girls made a second album but the group soon disrupted, mainly because of the fact that Rick James left Motown Records in the mid-80’s.
