Stringtronics
Mindbender
Peer International | 1972
If this was not re-issued in 2004, then you’d have to pay a serious amount of money to get this one. One of the most sought after UK Library records and enjoying a celebrated cult status, Stringtronic’s 'Mindbender' is a true enlightenment and floats between psychedelic baroque, dusty 70s soundtracks and experimental cool jazz.
The main sound of the album is electric strings, who determine most arrangements and melodies, put together in the first six tracks by Barry Forgie. The other songs are done by French composers Nino Nardini and Roger Roger, while 'Undercover Girl' and 'Freedom Road' are written by Anthony Mawer, the latter song being a hypnotic spectacle where electric violins and keyboards go hand in hand. A Latin touch is 'Afro-Samba' with some samba percussion and a vibe that builds a tension but never really explodes. The most famous groove and pretty exotic too is surely 'Tropicola', a track that’s been on several compilations and was re-issued on Jazzman Records. Madlib took two songs from this album; a keyboard loop in 'Mists Down' for Dudley Perkin’s 'Fallin' while 'Safari Park' is used almost in its entire part for Quasimoto’s 'Raw Addict pt 2' (of 'The Further Adventure Of…').
Re-issued in 2004 on Vadim Music with a new cover design and including an interview with Barry Forgie himself. We suggest you buy this one, the wallet will agree.
