Weldon Irvine
The Sisters
Saucerman | 1979

The mysterious Irvine record that was finally re-issued only a few years ago and goddamned it’s a favourite. Don’t get me wrong, Weldon Irvine made nothing but class-act music. Pick any album of him, listen to it and be amazed. 'The Sisters' ain’t nuthin but that good ol funk music in the style of two of my favourite funksters Don Blackman (features on this album) and Tom Browne (this album features vocals by Toni Smith who sung on Browne’s 'Funkin For Jamaica').

Supreme arrangements, sometimes reminding of Stevie Wonder ('Think I’ll Stay A While') and mellow jazz are makin this album a blessing to the ear. Another reason why I dug up this album: Just Blaze seems to have re-discovered the song 'Morning Sunrise' and flipped it for Memphis Bleek f/ Jay-Z’s 'Dear Summer' (the beat is also on Ras Kass’ 'Revenge Of The Spit'), leavin the song to be one of the most requested and treasured singles of the 2005 summer season.

Weldon Irvine committed suicide in 2002, leavin behind a much treasured legacy, honoured by artists such as Madlib, who created a dedication album as Monk Hughes.
