Kero One Windmills Of The Soul Plug Label • 2006

Remember a time where jazz and hip-hop went hand in hand. I’m not talking about De La Soul or ATCQ but groups like Digable Planets, Dream Warriors, Ghetto Philharmonic, Justice System or US3 where the producer started from a jazz instrument loop and then built on to eventually come up with a hip-hop track.

Anno 2006, Kero One is bringin back that type of production ànd sound. Pretty much an accomplishment if you ask us! 'Windmills Of The Soul' is all about enjoying a mellow piano stab, a funky horn loop, a bugged-out double bass line or a raspy flute. Good music where rhymes not really take over and don’t have to, because the strength of this album is the jazzy production with live instruments who obey to cool and appealing arrangements. Some songs are strictly instrumental; 'Ain’t That Something' is an easy jazz-funk tune, reminding of a Roy Ayers or Weldon Irvine track, while 'It’s A New Day' is richly layered with tight drums, some singin, trumpet and keyboard solo’s. Non-instrumental highlights are 'In A Dream' with a nice little soul sample in the chorus, 'Tempted' with a real nicely chopped bass line in the genre of an early Premier production, the extremely good vibes on 'Keep It Alive', and 'Musical Journey' where Kero pretty much sums it up: 'My alter-ego is on production, providing the fuel, my school of thought is elementary, bringin it back to basics, lacin the cuts like surgeons, giving hip-hop a facelift'.

We have a bad feeling that plenty of people will sleep on this album, but really, if you like good music you need to check this out, because, with the exception of for example Raw Produce, hip-hop doesn’t sound this jazzy anymore!
