Clan Destined
ABBRACADAMN
Domination | 2007

A psychedelic album cover reveals a tip of the veil of what this album has to offer. Mind-buggling, atmospheric and erratic, the beats, with jazzy undertones, doubt between following Jay Dee’s footsteps or crossing boundaries. Lush and pleasantly moving along, this album is the ideal company for a lazy night; the music puts you in a tranquil mood with only the lyrics provoking some thought now and then.

A spin-off of the VJC (Vinyl Junkies Clique), the Clan Destined is AmbiDextrous and DT, who both met in Morehouse College, Atlanta. Clearly influenced by groups such as Black Star, The Roots and Slum Village, both musicians still manage to add a newer dimension to their music and aren’t afraid to add some Atlanta influences with songs like 'Bigger Fish' and 'The Monkey', holdin a dirty production and up-tempo, tongue-twisting rhyming. Not our favourite songs, but the humour and sharpness of the lyrics both save the party. Two songs that clearly differ from the other tracks, which take a more New York, Detroit-wards direction.

'Freeze' has a hard-hitting snare with a soulful guitar and warm bassline running underneath it, the ultimate beat for a MC to live it out and reminisce at the same time; 'Type of pain we deliver, just to make you remember like Kool Aid stains'. 'Set Your Life Free' reminds of a J Rawls production and emerges the crowd to chill out, enjoy the moment and party along. In the same Lone Cats' vein lays 'Never All Ways', the group’s manifest with a dynamic view on life through some heart-felt spittin 'and I ain’t sayin that I never had a off-day, and I ain’t sayin that I never made mistakes, but I never made a mistake at not learning, and I never made a mistake at not earning, and some people never get it right and stop growing, never getting open and their lives stop growing'. Another album highlight that can not left unmentioned is the instrumental cut 'The Language', where the bumpy beat composition makes us 1) injure our neck muscles (ai!) and 2) keep pushing the 'repeat' button.

DT and Amdex grew up in the nineties era and started makin music in the last years of the previous millennium, that tells. Their musical background is hard to not recognize but they still have moulded it into a personal style that holds different influences from all kinds of scenes and artists. Great effort and hopefully a stepstone for people to discover the rest of the VJC.
