Moka Only
Lowdown Suite 2 - The Box
Feelin Music | 2009

When it comes down to Moka Only and releases one could easily loose track (better say 'album'). When one is announced another album comes along already. Later this year, the self-proclaimed 'hungry hippo' will release a full length album together with Pharcyde's Bootie Brown and (hopefully) the Mister Mister project with Mr. Brady. Now it's time for the sequel to his 2003-released 'Lowdown Suite'. With no loss of quality, it is remarkable that Moka Only ever sleeps.

Food ('fried once, dried twice, and if it don’t work out, dry it again'), ferries and nostalgia ('I live in 93 because it’s better there') pass the revue quicker than his dreamy loops hit the lazy drums. With silly yet accurate humour ('still a bag of fun and ridiculous too') Moka alliteratively paints little yet meaningful metaphorical pictures of life and music. Brass instruments, soul samples, jazz jives, rumba rhythms and rap references enhance a plectrum of moods filled with brightness, cosiness and melancholy. 'I’m not concerned with what you label me as' the durable mammal raps in 'It’s Lowdown', it’s hard to label Moka as if, or it would be 'lowdown', the only constant that we somehow could find in his multi-extensive discography till now.

On ‘Be Allright’ Torch promises us to continue to come thorough, and, after so much consistency, we believe every word he says, especially after an album like this. Next appointment with a Moka album: very soon!
