Breakestra
Dusk Till Dawn
Strut | 2009
Break fiends, 70’s funk afficionados beware, because Breakestra is back after a five years’ break. With the first listening we had some problems with our time orientation, as the music totally pulls you back thirty years earlier. At the same time, we were very surprised with the group's ability to even be able to reproduce some of that era’s best funk music.
The LA funk band surprises with fresh compositions, drums fried in the Western sun, basslines soaked in Mojito’s and, definitely not too underestimate, brightfull singing. This dedication to DJ Dusk turns out to be one hell of a party, with even more feel-good music than a Sergio Mendes album.
‘Come On Ever’ (is that Millie Jackson on the vocals?), ‘Get It Right’ (is that Al Jarreau?), Me&Michelle (with a surprising violin solo in between), ‘No Matter Where You Go’ (go find that funky funly soul) on the James Brown-tip, and -pleasing their wide following among hip-hop fans with this one-‘Posed To Be’ (featuring Chali 2Na) are the highlights of an album that can never stand out in creativity but definitely in craftsmanship and dedication.
