Mr X & Mr Z
We Drink Old Gold/Kick It Wicked
Urban Rock | 1987
40'z have graced covers and have been celebrated over in songs like Beatnuts' '40 Oz', Black Sheep's 'Pass The 40' and, of course, Eazy E's 'Sippin On A 40' but the ultimate beer anthem is this track. Known as one of the first product placements in hip-hop ('The Old Gold commercial is my theme'), this parody of Eric B and Rakim's 'I Know You Got Soul', is an ode to the Old Gold, well-known among gangsters and hood rats, and after movies like 'Boyz N The Hood' and 'Menace II Society', a worldwide phenomenon, wanted in places all across the world from Sydney to Alaska.
These days, the record is still so wanted and beloved by many hip-hop fans, that it's eventually re-released on the same Urban Rock label, also publisher of Dismasters' singles and sublime LP 'And Then Some…'. Not sure if Quasimoto's reference in 'The Clown Episode C' from his latest 'The Further Adventures Of…' has something to do with the record's sudden popularity, but this record has been hunted down for years ànd it's in Just Blaze's top ten of all time. Mr X's lyrics are clever and funny 'I start to drink and then I think I see elephants that are coloured pink' and the P-Fine/Hank Love production is original as they added the smooth chorus of Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Brazilian Rhyme' ('parapa-pa-paaa') over the Bobby Byrd drums that were also used on the Eric B & Rakim cut. But even more original is Mr Z throwin in and out breaks on the single's 'cut and paste' B-side 'Kick It Wicked'.
The A-side 'We Drink Old Gold' was and still is a regular on compilations, bachelor parties and mixtapes (it was the title for 7L & Tall Mat’s blazin old school mix CD). Its authors, Mr X and Mr Z, released another single called 'Relax' on G-Fine Records, but then vanished from the rap game…untill Supreme Cut Master C aka Mr X re-entered the game as Wu Tang Clan member Mathematics...to be continued.
