Romeo & Rhyme
Comin Up Short/Nothing But A Fan
Main Frame | 1988
Romeo and Rhyme in effect! This is one of LA's most hardcore duo's in rap history. Not because their beats were so hardcore or their mouths were foul, but simply because they were the first to openly diss the West Coast's most dangerous crew NWA.
We learnt about Romeo and Rhyme through their supa dope tracks on the smooth old school compilation 'What Does It All Mean?' (1989), on which they shined with 'Together We Chill' and the fantastic 'I'm The Master', a funky smooth cut with some mumbling sampled through the solid drums. Much more difficult to find is this 12'' from 1988. The cover is simply hilarious with both MC's chillin by a tombstone with subscriptions sayin 'NWA - Eazy E = 187', somehow amateuristically added to the cover picture after it was developped, but that's the old school for ya! 'Comin Up Short' is a cool track with a clean break but we should especially commemorate the B-side 'Nothin But A Fan', dissin everyone from NWA, sayin they wanna bite Romeo & Rhyme's style. The chorus is creative sampling lettin Eazy-E say things like; 'Yo Dre, get the fuck out of here!'. Who would've ever guessed at the time that Romeo & Rhyme's words would become reality in the early 90s?
Besides from being visionary, the record is a nice piece of hip-hop, with production by The Bomb Squad's Lionel Ridenhour, charachterized by funky sampling, great scratches and lyrics soundin hilarious, creative and hardcore at the same time! One of West Coast rap's little treasures, hard to become, but a must for any hip-hop collection.
