DJ Alibi
Let's Ride
Tres Records | 2007

Raised in Moscow and a Canadian citizen since age 12, DJ Alibi has rocketeered his career from a Russian immigrant to one of Tres Records’ most promising debut acts in only a few years. First heard on Tres Records’ 'Shipping And Handling' mix in 2006, after being recruited by Thes One at nineteen years old, this bearded Caucasian is now in the process of readying his first LP 'One Day'.

First single of the album is the up-tempo funk-infused 'Let’s Ride' with an electrifying presence by Boston’s Insight, handling all rhymes over a beat that betrays Alibi’s broad musical background, as he first learnt to play the violin at 4 followed by other classical instruments. Alibi’s sense for broadening hip-hop is clearly underlined in the instrumental composition 'Samba Internacional', drenched in Brazilian grooves and jazzy arrangements. The third track on this 12", 'Don’t Look Down' introduces Toronto’s Bamboombox to the world, Alibi’s group and part of the Soliva Spit Project, over a lush, eerie soul voice-implied beat with each member showing that this group is the next best thing out of Canada.

This 12" (not only the lead single) is a tasteful appetizer for a full album that surely will be included in the race for best debut album of the year. A listen to this very nice debut by a prodigious producer, whose promising future is now to begin, will suffice to comprehend.
