Phil The Agony
Think Green
- | 2009

The new hype is ecological awareness. Not a bad thing of course, as we’re drinking Pina Coladas on the beach in March, which is not really something to be optimistic about, is it? But really, how many rappers have actually spread the word of being nice to Mother Nature? Although we’re heading for an ecological drama, rap doesn’t seem to mind. Back in the days, there were plenty of legendary collaborations by some of the most notorious artists to rap about some kind of social issue. Nowadays, not a lot of rappers seem to really mind. Are they? Worse. Environmental rap seems to be ridiculed, just take a look at Youtube.

But…Phil the Agony makes up a lot. Where everyone from critic to unbiased adept would have the intention to link ‘green’ with something else but environment -especially in Phil the Agony’s case- this Strong Arm Steady member has made a concept song -the album has a minimalist 100% recycled, eco-friendly CD sleeve!- that instantly turns him into the self-proclaimed peace-treaty black Al Gore ('inconvenient but it’s the truth').

OK, Phil jumps on the wave that ecologic awareness is spreading right now, but as we stated before, what can be wrong with that? It’s for the good cause and the more promotion it gets the better. Although it’s sometimes hard to take it seriously throughout the track, his message comes across fluently and unforced, sometimes even ironic ('powered by the sun just for fun') or just playful ('Oscar the Grouch, Shrek, you know what I’m saying, think green'), but without turning into a forceful preacher with a boring manifest.

Blacksmith colleague Talib Kweli ('think green like the Magic Don Juan mink') joins him ('my flow is global-warming') on what is really a pamphlet of eco-friendly suggestions, that come in quite handy ('water ya lawn after five'). The thought that animals will take revenge if man destroy their environment is Ace Venturish but at the same time a strong metaphor; an effective, humorous hyperbole.

Only a damn shame that the album this song appears on, isn’t focusing on the concept that was raised in its lead single. Most tracks don’t actually really stress on the environment issue, which is a shame. ‘Think Green’ though proves that Phil the Agony is ready to take it on a greener level and any challenge that his colleagues fail to pinpoint. Anyway…Earth Day is April 22nd
