'Nuntype' reminds us of trying to watch an avant-garde movie for the first time; tempting but complicated, until you strain yourself to listen to it and then it's only a matter of liking it or not. 'Nuntype' is not just hip-hop, it's music, it's drum n bass, it's electronic, it's lounge, it's a movie, a requiem of a dream or a space odyssey, it's 2025, it's transcending.

When we first spinned this CD at the office, we were immediately thinking of whom his voice sounds like? Wulf heard Saafir with a cold, Englebert was thinking of a cousin of Celph Titled's who's more interested in reading books and watching movies instead of playing with guns, while I heard comparisons with Sage Francis after he spent a whole day waiting tables.

There was once a time when Al Capone ruled the Chicagoan underground, but nowadays hip-hop does. Contemporary hip-hop giants such as Kanye West and Common have put the city on the rap map and are rowing their boat on the mainstream, but beneath it all, there lays an underground that has never been stronger than today.

Dooley-O is the embodiment of the old school spirit. Makin tons of fun, braggin around and scoopin the girls like a maniac are the main motivations behind his artistic drive. Dooley overwhelms us with humour, punch- and pick-up lines, creative sampling, some scratching and laces the roughest, funkiest drums since the late 80s (the outro is 1.30 min of straight-up drummin!).

'Hip Hop Gold Dust' introduces the average Prince Paul fan (read: average hip-hop fan) to a lot of unknown essentials, it pleases rap geeks with unreleased jewels and vinyl heads get those treasures with a better sound quality, because some of the songs on this record were originally pressed on vinyl with a low sound.

What could've been on this record? For now, we can think of 'It's Good To Be Here', 'What Cool Breezes Do', 'Examination Of What', 'The May 4th Movement', 'Black Ego', and 'Borough Checks', but then again this is a compilation, which depends on matter of choice, preferences and legal issues, but also proving that Digable Planets has a whole lot of good songs to choose from!

Belgium in the house! 40Winks is an Antwerp production tandem that hooked up with Japanese record label Escapism in an effort to spread their music across the globe. The 'Extended Pleasure' EP is a collection of 7 instrumentals characterized by jazzy moodiness.

'Mr Moov Sumthin' moves you to think, to nod your head, to dance and even to laugh. The production by The Unknown, Dayjuva, Cyrus and Oddisee is not groundbreaking at all but it has this strong, persistent but at the same time relaxed, soulful vibe, confident just like the emcee. Now please excuse us, as we keep this pumping for a while.

2001 marked the release of Superrappin vol 1, a collection of the underground's next generation of talented artists. Among them a handful of Canada's finest such as Frankenstein, Choclair, Da Grassroots ànd Mathematik, who shone and glistened with the excellent 'Following Goals' (feat Bahamadia), taken of his 1999 debut full length 'Ecology'.
